Submissions
BJALP invites the submission of manuscripts. Manuscripts must address legal and/or policy issues that relate to African Americans and/or people of color, generally. We welcome manuscripts from academics, practitioners, policy makers, and students. Manuscripts are also accepted from non-lawyer authors.
Submissions are accepted beginning in February of each year and are reviewed on a rolling basis until the volume is full (this can occur as early as June or as late as October). Authors are encouraged to submit manuscripts as early as possible.
Manuscripts can be submitted three ways:
- ExpresssO: http://law.bepress.com/expresso (this is our preferred method)
- E-mail: bjalp_submissions@law.berkeley.edu
- Mail: send a CD or hard disk containing your files to:
Berkeley Journal of African-American Law & Policy

Manuscripts submitted to us may be accompanied by a resume/CV and a cover letter, but are not necessary for consideration. Manuscripts will be accepted with the understanding that their content is unpublished previously. If any part of a paper has been published previously, or is to be published elsewhere, the author must include this information at the time of submission. The text and footnotes of manuscripts should conform generally to The Chicago Manual of Style and to The Bluebook: A Uniform System of Citation (we understand that non-lawyer authors may be unfamiliar with the Bluebook). We respect the political views and conventions of the author with regard to the use of the terms, "African American," African-American," "Black," and "black." For all material generated by the journal itself, we use "African-American" when the term is used as an adjective and "African American(s)" when the term is used as a noun, unless the author has an otherwise stated preference.
